Betty Crocker's Hostess Cookbook - 1967 First Edition First Printing
Just like a fine theatrical performance throwing a party calls for careful plotting, some rehearsal, and, of course, personal artistry... (from the introduction)
{HISTORY}
If you were a fan of the show, Mad Men, you would have seen this cookbook proudly displayed front and center on the counter of Betty Draper's kitchen for the entire first three seasons. An indispensable guide when it comes to planning 1960s-era parties, whether fictional or not, there was no more trusted advisor than Betty Crocker with her practical tips, modern trends, crowd-pleasing foods, and organized approach to party-throwing.
Compiled as an inspiration sourcebook, a cookbook, and a how-to guide, this 168-page Hostess Cookbook was first published in 1967 with the mission to make entertaining as fun, stylish, and delicious as possible for hostesses of all skill level, no matter the number of guests or the size of the party space.
Included here are a variety of suggested party menus for events throughout the year including holidays, weddings, and receptions. A Sporty Mixed Fourseome Lunch, A Midnight Snack Supper, A Fondue Party, Brunch Parisienne, A Reception Tea, A Malibu Barbecue, Company Favorites for Spur-of-the-Moment Dinners... whatever the occasion, Betty had a suggestion.
Recipes were compiled with the busy hostess in mind who wanted to enjoy the party as much as her guests and not be stuck in the kitchen all night preparing complicated foods. Many recipes include time-saving steps - use of a Betty Crocker cake mix or a make-ahead option - to keep preparations easy. Serving suggestions in the way of decor and tablescape design accompany each menu and helpful portion-size charts and scaled recipe diagrams cut complicated food purchasing calculations and market shopping out of the conversation when serving food for a crowd.
Interesting, engaging, and full of detailed instruction, if you ever wondered what midcentury life was like for the real Betty Draper's of America and the types of parties they threw, there's no better resource than beloved Betty Crocker.
