If dinner is to include ladies, it should be of light, fancy dishes; but, on the contrary, if intended for gentlemen alone, it should be more substantial and at the same time shorter. The Cook Book by "Oscar" of the Waldorf, 1896

{HISTORY}

That quote above is from Oscar Tschirky, the famous Maitre'd who presided over the Waldorf Astoria Hotel from 1893-1943. It is fun to think that this set of silverplate demitasse spoons made during the 1920's or after rested under the care and supervision of the discerning Oscar himself.

A wild bit of Waldorf legend hints that flatware from the hotel was often slipped into purses and pockets as a souvenir of an elegant and enjoyable meal. We are not sure if Oscar would have approved of such momento keeping, particularly given the fact that these demitasse spoons were of beautiful character and performed an important function. With their decorative handles and stamped marks on back, these spoons stirred coffee for all types of people from prominent Manhattanites to well to do travelers to icons of business and the creative arts.

Since its inception over 130 years ago, the Waldorf Astoria Hotel has been synonymous with luxury accommodations and exceptional service. Named for members of the Astor family, it began as two separate buildings on the site that now boasts the Empire State Building. In the 1920s, the original hotel buildings were demolished and a new Waldorf was built further uptown, where it still sits on Park Avenue between 49th and 50th Streets. No matter the location, the Waldorf was always known as a gathering place for wealthy members of New York society as well as prominent business executives from around the globe. First opened in 1893, with Oscar acting as host over the dining services, the Waldorf Astoria set the standard for impeccable service amongst luxury hotels in America.

This set of five spoons was made sometime around the 1920s and has been held in a private collection for a significant number of years. Tarnished in the most lovely of ways, these spoons each contain unique character and aging marks. In addition to serving as demitasse spoons, they also make wonderful utensils for sauces, jams, jellies, relishes, chutney, honey and seasonal dips on appetizer and hors d'oeuvres trays.  A true gift from the dining rooms of history, there is nothing more elegant than a bit of storied vintage silver at your table. We think Oscar would be so pleased to know that the hotel continues to add a sophisticated element to your food and festivities.
