{HISTORY}

Piled high with pastel-shaded macaroons, a frosted layer cake, the darkest of dark chocolate brownies, stacks of simple sugar cookies or a ring of blueberry studded muffins fresh from the oven... there are few baked goods that wouldn't look absolutely lovely when served on this pretty antique cake plate.

Made by Hermann Ohme in Silesia, Germany between 1900-1920, this porcelain cake plate features a gorgeous color palette of pastel shades that include blush, raspberry, pale butter, pale mint, dove grey and pine green.

Operating from the early 1880s to 1930, Hermann Ohme produced a collection of the prettiest German porcelain for the European, British, and American markets. Known for their two different porcelain glazes - Clear and Old Ivory, the Ohme factory manufactured complete dinnerware sets in a variety of patterns. But this pink rose design appeared on many different styles of dishware within the HO canon, from simple, classic shapes to more ornate pieces.

Ohme's Old Ivory glaze tinted the porcelain to produce a soft creamy shade while the Clear glaze highlighted the natural bright white color of the porcelain clay. This cake plate, bright and airy with a ring of free-floating roses wrapping around the rim and gold splattered painted handles, features the Clear glaze.  A thin gold inner stripe adds a little extra reflective shimmer.

Very successful during its run, the downfall of Hermann Ohme ultimately was the Great Depression, when the export trade was significantly interrupted. By that time, most of Ohme's business relied heavily on export relationships with other countries and when the economy collapsed, unfortunately so did the pottery.

Lucky for us their beautiful dishes still remain. So pretty for an assortment of baking adventures, this cake plate will help you celebrate the most delicious of occassions 100-year-old bread plates brighten the day with all sorts of cottage charm.
