{HISTORY}

The Ohio China Company, also known as O.C.Co was in operation in East Palestine, Ohio from the 1890s-1918. One of many local potteries in the area, O.C.Co made a variety of dishware for domestic use including pitchers, plates, bowls, sanitaryware and this interesting little dish, which may have once been part of a washstand set.

With its two patches of green fern florals and its embossed detailing, this pretty little heirloom is just the right size for a lot of modern-day uses, especially when it comes to the kitchen and the table. But we like it best, these days, for use as a shallow vase or succulent garden container.  Its shape is wide but not very deep, making it ideal for short-stemmed blooms or small succulents with roots that spread close to the surface and take some time to grow.

After O.C.Co closed in the mid-1910s, a West Virginia ceramics company, E. R. Advanced Ceramics, purchased the factory. and has kept it in operation still today.  Even though the Ohio China Company may not have made it past the post-WWI years, at least their pottery is still a part of the landscape today. A bit of a ghost from the past, there are not many O.C.Co dishes still in circulation, which makes this little charmer all the more special and unique when it comes to your decor and how you choose to incorporate it.

Although it is stamped with the words Limoges Porcelain alongside the O.C.Co mark, this dish is not made of porcelain but most likely was inspired by a French Limoges pattern or style of pottery. French Limoges was very popular during this era and many American pottery makers tried to copy the delicate designs and shapes of their European counterparts.
