...the great Mississippi, the majestic,the magnificent Mississippi, rolling its mile-wide tide along, shining in the sun... Mark Twain -  Life on the Mississippi, page 33

{HISTORY}

Before Mark Twain became one of America's most beloved writers, he was Samuel Clemens, a wide-eyed boy determined to live a life of adventure and freedom. One of his first forays into that determinedly exciting life was indulging a passion to become a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River. This experience would turn out to be pivotal in Sam's life as it was where he discovered his pen name, Mark Twain, and it laid the groundwork for his future novel, and most popular work, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

In 1874, Mark Twain published his experiences of those steamboat days in Life on the Mississippi, which details all of his adventures on the mighty river and in port towns along the way. Colorful characters, interesting facts and legendary tall tales that only Mark Twain could make believable fill this fascinating account of life on the water in the mid 1800's. It also includes a retrospective review two decades later.

This 1917 edition of Life on the Mississippi was published by P.F. Collier and features illustrations of Mark Twain and some scenes from the stories. Aged to perfection, it features a gold-gilt spine, dark green cover boards and toned pages making it gorgeous both inside and out.
