{HISTORY}

Made in Hanley, England in 1892 by the pottery John H. Weatherby & Sons, this gorgeous semi-porcelain floral platter is aged to perfection when it comes to unique antique character.  For over a century it was useful as a serving piece for all sorts of meals, but now it is an ideal display piece thanks to its authentic markings and years of time weathered adventuring. 

Featuring Weatherby's popular Sylvan pattern, a transferware design that contains both dots and flowers, it is an interesting shade of blue  - a hue that sits somewhere on the color wheel between teal, grey and navy blue. Embossed handles and a scalloped rim add extra flourish, but the true beauty of this piece rests in the evident mishaps of time. Let's look...

There is staining of a red clay shade on some areas around the rim,  a pit mark near the center of the platter that has yielded a cobweb of interesting crazing lines and several flecks of tiny blue dots (which possibly could have occurred in the original manufacture). All that being noted, there's nothing better than finding a 130 year old piece of dishware that looks like it has been around for 130 years. Authentic time-worn aesthetics are always so attractive!

The pottery John Weatherby & Sons operated for over 100 years in Henley, England, A family business that employed several generations of the Weatherby family,  they produced dishware for home use as well as a hotelware. Throughout the 20th century, JHW employed hundreds of loyal workers and maintained a solid reputation for high quality dishware and beautiful designs. Unfortunately unable to compete with foreign manufacturers and the emergence of less expensive, mass produced  dishware, the pottery closed in 2000.
