{HISTORY}

Cannes. It’s the name of a town in France. The name of an internationally acclaimed film festival. And it’s the name of this pretty ceramics pattern made in Hanley, England by the pottery, John H. Weatherby & Sons.

Featuring a gorgeous array of grey-blue florals and swirls, this antique wash pitcher was part of JHW’s Durability series which was made between 1892-1924 and was available in pink as well.

Originally accompanied by a matching wash basin bowl and assorted chamber pieces, for over a century, this pitcher was part of the daily grooming habits of men and women from the Victorian period onward. Still very much useful in our modern day ways of living, antique wash pitchers make great vases, watering cans, and decorative displays, especially when tucked in with antique ironstone and mismatched dishware collections. .

We especially love the color of this pitcher and the design on the decorated handle, which is just as lovely as the floral patterns on the front and back. The pattern color is similar to denim blue, but also has the ability to change colors depending on the light from soft grey to midnight blue.

A small age-old hairline crack near the spout and a small chip on the spout rim signal some adventures throughout its 100+ years of life, but neither imperfection alters the beauty and functionality of this lovely wanderer from the Victorian age.

The pottery John Weatherby & Sons manufactured dishware for over 100 years in Hanley, England. A family business that employed several generations of the Weatherby family,  they produced dishware for the domestic market as hotelware for the hospitality industry. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, JHW employed hundreds of loyal workers and maintained a solid reputation for high quality dishware and beautiful designs.

As a new century dawned, unfortunately JHW & Sons was unable to compete with foreign manufacturers and the industry’s emergence of less expensive, mass produced  dishware. The pottery ceased operations in 2000.
