{HISTORY}

Made in Austria between 1899-1918, this antique porcelain plate was handpainted by an artist named Laporte for the pottery O & E.G. Royal Austria. The O & E.G. in the pottery name stands for the owner's initials - brothers Oscar and Edgar Gutherz who built up a reputation for creating some of the finest porcelain dishware in the world.

It is always fun to draw connections between antique pieces that seemingly have nothing in common at all. This plate is connected with this serving bowl via Lazarus Straus, a German immigrant to America who became a key figure in the import business of European dishware.  It was Lazarus who financed the Gutherz Brothers pottery in Austria and most likely was the man responsible for importing O & E.G. porcelain to America in the early years of the 20th century.

The antique dish world is vast, but it's fun to see that it is also very interconnected, especially when it comes to pieces that have traveled around the United States for a hundred years. This plate featuring gorgeous lilies of the valley was found in a hilltop town in Seattle while the antique Lazarus Straus bowl was found in a seaside town in  Florida. Two coasts, two connections, two lovely pieces of history, all come to stay for a spell in one kitchen shop. Such magic!
