1920s Schlitz Beer Candid Photograph - Men and Beer and Cigars
Any man's life, told truly, is a novel. Ernest Hemingway
{HISTORY}
Back in the day before quarantine and social distancing, there were warm-weather cocktail nights spent hanging out on the porch with your best pals. This photo was taken during the 1920s when Schlitz beer cans were made to look like something between a glass bottle and a flat top beer can, and when men's clothes had great style and interesting details.
There are so many fascinating stories going on in this photograph. Let's look at a few details...
There's the guy smoking the cigar who looks like he's about to say something terrific. There is the snazzy dresser in the center with his keyhole neckline and fancy braided belt. There's the guy on the right with his direct gaze, his rolled up shirt sleeves, and his speckled wool pants. There is the hint of a little girl behind him, a hint of a house behind all of them and the porch roof hovering above. There's clapboard, two windows and a railing. And then there are the very retro beer cans, which helped us date this scene. So fun! You could write ten stories just from these candid moments caught up in time.
Who are these guys? Are they related? Are they friends? Are they neither? Is it Friday night and they are relaxing after a long week? Or is it a house party and the guys decided to take the convo out back? Maybe its a backyard wedding reception, or a family birthday party, or someone's welcome home soiree. That's the fun of old unidentifiable photos. Set the scene and create the story again and again and again.
