Vintage 1950s Half Apron Pattern - McCall's Printed Pattern 1781 circa 1953
{HISTORY}
A sewer's favorite pattern company since the 1870s, McCall's was the trusted resource for creating all sorts of fashionable attire for the entire family. You may think of an apron as a ultilitarian accessory in the kitchen, but in the 20th century it was a garment that was just as important for the fashioanble home entertainer as a new dress or a stylish pair of shoes.
Apron patterns offered all sorts of choice when it came to shape, pattern, length, detail and design. This pattern known as #1781 was part of the Misses' Easily Made Short Apron series and featured two types of apron with three distinct styles since one was reversible. A large, off-center tulip pocket added a dynamic floral element to each apron and the choice of scalloped or a ricrac edge added unique flouirsh.
In flattering A-Line style this classic apron design ties at the waist and then flairs out into a a fuller knee-length skirt. Personal taste in fabric and color palette offered signature style and represented not only a takent for sewing but fashion design as well.
A complete pattern, this one includes it original 1953 envelope, instruction guide and tissue paper pattern guide.
McCall's sewing patterns were the launchpad that evenually led to McCall's Magazine, one of the seven sisters of widely popular women's magazines published during the 20th century. We just love that a sewing pattern kicked off the whole enterprise. It's a testament to the inspiration that sewing offers. You just never know where a good pattern (or a good apron) might take you!
