{HISTORY}

Made in the late 1980s for the import company MSR based in New Jersey, this vintage drippings jar contains all the historic symbolism of a long-ago love in the kitchen. The drippings jar has been around for hundreds of years - a container designed to store bacon drippings or grease fat from one cooking adventure to the next.

Like a sourdough starter or an aged curry sauce, the grease kept getting recycled into jars like this use after use, imparting a more layered flavor each time. Since it never went bad, the graese jar often rested on the counter near the stove or even on it,  where it could be accessed quickly and easily each time a meal was in the making.

Particularly a part of Southern kitchens, the drippings jar was a thrifty concept but also a way of imparting the smoky aroma and salty flavor of pork fat into a host of dishes from fried chicken to collard greens, beans to rice and every soup, stock and vegetable in between.

Whether this drippings jar was made for its specified use or it was meant to harken back to a different time of culinary nostalgia we are not sure. But it's colorful vintage style is reminiscent of 1930s/1940s design, so it's lovely on both the function front and the heirloom aesthetic front.

Containing a ring of pansy flowers around the base and lid, and a ringed beehive-style design at the bottom, it's a colorful vessel that is useful for a wide range of kitchen tasks. Of course there is the traditional grease jar use, but also its a great size for small pet treats, butter storage, for use as holder for tea bags,  coffee grounds, spare change, kitchen odds and ends and cleanup items including sponges and rags. Set the lid aside and it becomes a great holder for kitchen utensils, flatware, garden flowers and the like.

Please see photos.
