Vintage Old Fitzgerald Prime Wildlife Decanter Whiskey Bottle - 1960s Barware - Pheasant Bird
The bottle of whiskey - a second one - was now in constant demand by all present... F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby
Distilling whiskey since the 1870's, Old Fitzgerald Prime was one of the few alcohol brands allowed to be made during Prohibition, due to its use as a medicinal aid as a well as a libation. Located in Louisville, Kentucky, it was the creation of the Van Winkle family who also produced numerous other whiskey brands including Pappy Van Winkle and Weller. Known throughout most of the American South during the late 1800's, it became available in European markets in the early part of the 20th century and continues to be made to this day.
This vintage Old Fitzgerald Prime decanter was part of a wildlife series that featured several kinds of birds, including ducks and eagles. This one bears a beautiful pheasant flying through the marsh grass in a colorful array of red, green, and apricot. Originally, this decanter came with a large jewel-like glass stopper that was deep red in color and imposing in shape. Somewhere along this bottle's adventurous life, it was separated from its stopper and replaced with a champagne cork to secure its contents. Other fun details include the original paper labeling that went along with the packaging of this famous whiskey for the retail market... the Tennessee state tax sticker, the Internal Revenue Distilled Spirits number label and the paper product stickers on both back and front. Many of these collectible bottles today do not contain these paper labels and stickers, so these extra layers of history add a bit of interesting aesthetic to the decanter.
