Rows of colorful home-canned fruits and vegetables, all neatly labeled are an achievement of which any home cook might be justly proud. Meta Givens, 1953

{HISTORY}

Aesthetically pretty and highly functional, there is nothing more visually engaging in a kitchen, cupboard or pantry than a grouping of clear glass vintage canning jars. Displaying summer's bounty, secret recipes and creative concoctions, glass jars showcase all the colorful appeal of homegrown and homemade goodness. They also work double-time as organizer's for all sorts of kitchen tids and bits.

Without any distinct maker's mark on this vintage wire bail hinged canning jar, we are left to decode the origins of this petite jar based on a couple of plausible assumptions. Marked RP-38 7 on the bottom, this canning jar was mostly likely made by Richard's Packaging, based in Ottawa, Canada who used RP as a manufacturer code during the 1980's when their glass products were manufactured in Taiwan. The other element that is in keeping with that decade is the hard plastic liner that accompanies the red rubber seal. Other notable marks on this jar include 4 stars around the shoulder, the words WIRE SIDE on the neck and the four pointed compass rose style design on the glass lid with the number 4 etched onto one side.

Unlike popular Ball and Atlas jars which capture the canning jar market these days,  this one is particularly fun for collectors because of its unusual markings and hard to find status.
