{HISTORY}

Made in Hartford, Connecticut in the later half of the 19th century by William Rogers Manufacturing Co, this antique silverplate compote dish is presentation-ready for all sorts of festive dining soirees. Nothing adds more interest and character to a table than an elevated dish, and this one, with its shallow bowl and small footprint, offers lots of possibility when it comes to food styling and display.

From elaborate stackable foods to a simple display of pretty fruits, from lush flower bouquets to tiers of chocolate rum balls and holiday cookies, from small succulent plants to party favors, it's fun to imagine all the different ways this compote dish can add a little extra delight to a display.

Tarnished in all the best ways, this one has seen a century's worth of festivities, and it bears that lovely layer of history that can only be achieved through authentic life lived over 100 years. Here in the Vintage Kitchen, we love tarnished silver for its unique, one-of-a-kind weathering, but if you prefer shiny silverplate, this one can easily be polished to shimmery status once again.

The William Rogers Manufacturing Co was first founded in Hartford, CT in the 1860s by William Rogers Sr and Jr.. Part of a long (and often confusing) line of silver companies associated with the name Rogers, Willam Rogers Manufacturing Co was well-known around the world for its elegant designs and durable construction. In addition to their North American marketplace, they also exported silver ware to Cuba, Mexico, South America, Europe, and Australia. In 1898, they became part of International Silver. Included here is a photo of the William Rogers Manufacturing Co factory from a Hartford CT commercial directory published in 1889.
