{HISTORY}

A gorgeous example of mid-19th-century Scottish pottery, this brown floral transferware wash pitcher jug was made in Scotland around the mid-1850s. In addition to flowers, it contains circular imagery of a lithograph-style mountain landscape in the center of the bouquet.

Marked with a simple W & S. in a garter backstamp with the word Athens written above, most likely this piece was made by Clyde Pottery for their Athenian Sketches series. A rare find from a pottery that was in business between 1810-1905, this beautiful pitcher contains all sorts of interesting character.

Floral bouquets are featured on the sides, the handle, the front section underneath the spout, the upper rim and the inside rim. The mountain landscape appears on both sides of the pitcher. In the bouquets at the top interior and exterior rim, there is a small bird drinking water.  Patches of light staining highlighted by fine crazing add a lovely aged aesthetic. And finally an embossed strap-style design is included on the handle for extra grip when lifting the pitcher.

Clyde Pottery made a variety of jugs, jars, pitchers and assorted pieces for the domestic and North American markets, which might suggest how this particular pitcher wound up in New England.

So pretty for rustic floral displays and interior decor, this pitcher looks marvelous when paired with antique ironstone, mismatched brown transferware dishes and autumn tablescapes.

{SPECIAL FEATURES}

- Rare find

- Stamped on bottom with maker's mark and pattern name

{CONDITION}

In lovely antique condition, especially considering that it is approaching it's 200th birthday in just a little over a decade. There is staining and crazing on both the interior and exterior. There are two small cracks on the interior rim in the spout area. One crack measures 1" inch in length. The other crack measures .75' inches in length. The longer crack does not carry through to the front of the pitcher. A small portion of the smaller crack can be seen from the front. The bottom of the pitcher contains three small age-old chips and a crack that measures about 4" inches in length. This crack runs horizontally on the pedestal portion and does not affect the pitcher's ability to hold water. Please see photos.

{SIZE}

Measures 11.25" inches (height) x 9" inches (handle to spout) x 7" inches (at widest part) and weighs just one ounce under 4 lbs.

{STYLE IDEA}

This pitcher looks beautiful with these antique ironstone dinner plates.
