{HISTORY}

Made by Anchor Pottery in Trenton, New Jersey between 1884 and 1926, this large antique wash basin features swags of blue azalea-like flowers, an embossed rim, and an exterior pintuck-type embossed design on the sides.  Originally, it would have been part of a grooming set complete with a matching pitcher and various accessories to assist in the daily bathing routines of Victorian Americans.

Founded by Israel Lacey in 1884, Anchor Pottery operated along the Delaware Canal making dinnerware, sanitary ware, and other ceramics for domestic use in both the U.S. and international markets.  They were part of a long line of successful potteries that operated in what would become one of the two largest ceramics hubs in the U.S. Eventually purchased by the Grand Union Tea Company, Anchor Pottery closed in 1926, but thankfully their beautiful pieces continue to live on highlighting history and and adding delight to interior spaces.

Nowadays, our modern sinks, showers, and bathtubs have replaced the need for wash basin bowls of the 1800s, but their usefulness is still quite handy. Fill this one up with ice and canned or bottled beverages and they make a great drink cooler for outdoor entertaining. Fill it with a mixture of flowers and plants and it turns into a gorgeous table centerpiece for parties and special events.

They also make a sturdy soaking basin for washing fragile linens, delicate materials, small ceramics or anything else that needs a gentle bath.  Other creative uses ensue as well - bird baths, storage holders, garden harvest bowls, and cabinet display.
