It must always be remembered that as rich as French work is at times, it is always logical and in good taste. Philip L. Goodwin

{HISTORY}

Containing a collection of writing and photographs surrounding the subject of French architecture, The Tuileries Brochures were published by the Chicago tile manufacturing firm, Ludowici-Celadon, as a reference tool for architects.

Including an array of different historic styles and periods of French architecture, these brochures were bound together in one volume in the 1930s.  This volume contains issues published between 1931 and 1932, and features the writings of a dozen different architects reflecting on all angles of interior and exterior architecture in France.

Part house tour, part travelogue, part history book, the Brochures combined notes on culture, lifestyle, form, and function in regards to varying aspects of windows, railings, doorways,  stonework, fireplaces, shutters, etc.  giving readers a true understanding of the very essence, vitality and lasting legacy of European craftsmanship.

"An intimate knowledge of the past, enriched by contact with and enlivened by a sturdy native imagination, made it possible for these untutored peasants to produce truly great architecture," writes architect Frank J. Forster in his article titled Provincial Architecture of Northern France. His piece is accompanied by photographs of stone farm buildings with moats and turrets, arched doorways and dormer windows.

"There was a desire for a smaller, but perfectly designed and appointed town or country house. The plan was to be convenient and compact because of the difficulty and dislike of being dependent upon a large corps of servants," writes Alfred Easton Poor in his article Formal Design in Minor French Buildings. he goes on to illustrate how French homes were designed to be dignified, combining comfort and elegance with privacy and room to entertain.

In Jacques Carlu's article, Falaise - The Heart of Normandy, he describes the landscape and the buildings that so fittingly belong there... "And spotted along the way are charming old towns and hamlets, with their little houses leaning against each other; some with an air of ancient pride; some with the modesty of mere ordinary well-to-do-ness; but all with a medieval and rural feeling."

Containing illustrations, measured drawings, and beautiful black and white photographs, bound in a celadon green hardcover boards with gilt lettering, this is a rare copy of a lovely coffee table book ideally suited for architecture and photography enthusiasts as well as lovers of all things French and old and treasured and true.
