Harry by the Sea by Gene Zion - 1965 Weekly Reader Children's Book Club Edition
{HISTORY}
It was an exciting November day in 1965 when Harry by the Sea debuted.
Written by Gene Zion (1913-1975) for his beloved bestselling Harry series, which started with Harry the Dirty Dog published in 1956, both kids and adults across the country fell in love with the antics and adventures of a cute little black and white spotted dog named Harry.
Harry's literary debut back in 1956 was all about how he didn't like to take a bath, but in 1965, there's not a bathtub in sight. Instead, Harry is headed to the beach on a family vacation. As a lover of the seashore, Harry was most excited about this summertime trip, but it wouldn't be an engaging story about a funny little dog if some shenanigans didn't ensue.
What exactly happens to Harry by the sea? We don't want to spoil the ending for you, so you'll have to read it to find out, but we will say that it does involve a case of mistaken identity and a hot dog stand to pique your interest.
Illustrated by Gene's wife, celebrated artist Margaret Bloy Graham (1920-2015), Harry by the Sea was the last Harry book and the last collaboration between Gene & Margaret. They separated in 1968, and Margaret remarried in 1972. The end of the collaboration also marked the end of Gene's writing career, so it was a pivotal book in the lives of three well-known figures in the children's book industry: Margaret, Gene, and Harry.
