If some of the stories  - of Alta, the eagle; of the baby mountain lion, Quito; and many, many others - will make readers feel a little closer to some of our native wild things, then this book will have done its greatest service. John K Terres

{HISTORY}

Gathered from stories published in Audubon Magazine pre-1958, American naturalist John K Terres shares a collection of real-life nature writing, observations, and illustration that is a beauty to behold in The Audubon Book of True Nature Stories. While Audubon magazine is known first and foremost as a publication about birds primarily, lots of animals of field and forest are highlighted here. Chipmunks, deer, lizards, moths, fisher cats, coyotes, and an assortment of winged wonders are just a handful of the stars detailed here.

Stories range from simple observations of backyard birding to curious tales of raising baby animals to emotionally charged stories of connecting with wildlife in surprising and unexpected ways. Because each vignette was written by a different author, there is a variety of style, content, and sentiment within this collection that is engaging and unique. Chicadees with elfin character, a dolphin reincarnated, desert mice similar to kangaroos, a love story between two wrens, a moth floating in the air of a sultry summer night these are some of the vignettes that will keep readers captivated from beginning to end. Beautifully illustrated throughout with drawings by Walter Ferguson, a well known 20th century American artist, this book is beautifully presented in both writing and design.

Audubon Magazine has been cultivating the careers of nature writers and enthusiasts for over 140 years. Although it's gone through several name changes since its inception, one thing it has never wavered on is its devotion to protect, advocate and draw attention to birds and the conservation issues that surround them.
