This is an outdoor cookbook, because dolls dote on mud, when properly prepared. They love the crunch of pine needles and the sweet feel of seaweed on the tongue... (from the Forward)

{HISTORY}

First published in 1961, this vintage recipe book was not intended for the traditional cook in the kitchen. The recipes included here weren't even intended for humans to eat.

Instead, these culinary meals were designed for dolls and teddy bears and any other sort of toy that might be interested in attending an outdoor party hosted by little kiddos.  From the fanciful imagination of writer, editor, restaurateur, and all-around Jill-of-all-trades, Marjorie Winslow (1923-2012), Mud Pies and Other Recipes is a delightfully sweet and creative book that encourages little ones to get outside and play around in nature.

Thoroughly approved by her own two kids, Kate and Susan, Marjorie's list of culinary activities includes whipping up a bowl of cornsilk spaghetti (ingredients include fresh air, sun, a melted ice cube, minced grass and sand), making a molded salad out of moss and cookie cutters, baking a pine needle upside down cake, and serving up a batch of berry boats.

So cute, this book is fun to read for both kids and parents. Illustrated throughout with drawings by beloved Danish illustrator Erik Blegvad, it promotes creative play by sparking the imagination and encouraging outside-the-box thinking. After you have read this book, you'll never look at a rhododendron leaf in the same way. You'll see a boat. A  mud puddle will become a soup bowl, crabgrass turns into gumbo, and sea kelp becomes a sandwich.

Just in time for summer fun and seaside vacations, this is a marvelous little book to tote along in the play bag, the picnic basket, or the car in anticipation of fanciful adventures ahead.
