{HISTORY}

Oh for the love of autumn earth tones!

This vintage planter features a shade similar to nutmeg or chestnut with chocolate brown swirls. A complimentary color companion to a variety of green leafy house plants and succulents, this shade instantly warms a room and adds rustic appeal to a natural setting.

Heavy and beautifully constructed, this planter was made in Zanesville, Ohio by Brush Pottery between the 1960s and early 1980s. Its classic bowl-style shape and short stature are ideal for a variety of interesting garden arrangements including an assortment of mini plants, a kitchen herb garden, shallow-rooted plants or a collection of forced bulbs.

Brush Pottery operated from 1909 to 1982 in Zanesville, Ohio and was known for all sorts of unique pieces and high-quality craftsmanship. They made all sorts of home decor pieces including jugs, vases, cookie jars, and figurines. Oftentimes, Brush pottery gets confused with McCoy pottery as they are often similiar in design when it comes to classic planter shapes and color applications. Between 1911 and 1925, both companies teamed up together to become Brush-McCoy but two two families who operated each pottery parted ways in the mid-1920s and the pottery was simply known as Brush from that point forward.

Big sellers during the mid-20th century,  especially during the winter months from January - March, planters like this one were advertised right and left in newspapers across the country. No doubt these growing stations helped soothe gardeners' spirits while waiting for spring and the excitement of outdoor planting adventures. It's fun to imagine all the different types of plants, flowers, and herbs this one might have hosted during the early months of the year all those decades ago. Thyme and rosemary, amaryllis and paperwhites, African violets and maidenhair ferns, succulents in all sizes and shapes... the possibilities go on and on.
