Great Recipes from Great Gardeners by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society - 1994 Edition
Gardeners are so often good cooks... Jane G. Pepper, President, Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, 1994
{HISTORY}
From the natural beauty of the Brandywine River Valley to the pastoral farm lands of Amish country to the historic city parks and a myriad of home-tended gardens stuffed with flowers and vegetables, any visitor to Pennsylvania will note the Key Stone state's horticultural pride on full display throughout the year.
No one celebrates that state pride and heritage more so than the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. First formed in 1827 in Philadelphia, this centuries old non-profit will celebrate its 200th birthday in 2027, which means two hundred years of supporting local botanical projects, education, research, philanthropical endeavors and community outreach all in praise of the gardener, both novice and professional.
As hosts of the annual internationally recognized Philadelphia Flower Show, the PA Horticultural Society is witness to not only the latest trends, inspirations, information and environmental issues facing gardeners today, but they have also always been keen observers, if not cooks, of meals that come from the garden.
In 1993, they published their first cookbook, Great Recipes from Great Gardens, with a 10,000 print run taht included an intimate look at some of their most successful botanical endeavors and 500 recipes covering brunch to after dinner desserts and everything in-between. A favorite upon debut, five months later, the cookbook sold out and another 7,500 cookbooks were published. And so it goes with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society... they are an authority on everything related to plants, trees, flowers and food.
Along with recipes and history of the Society and their valuable work within the community, serving suggestions, nutritional information, table display inspiration, and cooking tips can be found on every page.
Interesting recipes include Sausage and Potato Stew, Golden Gate Pasta, Lemon Custard Puffs, Elderberry Cordial, Flowerpot Herbal Butter, Butternut Squash Tea Muffins, Tomato-Potarto Caper, Dutch Pumpkin Soup, Zucchini Frittata, Christmas Coffee Cakes, Herb Bread, Cranberry-Peach Chutney, Crab Cakes with Dill Sauce, Chicken Cape Cod, Molasses Oatmeal Bread, Barbados Sweet Potato Pies, Daffodill Cake, Acorn Squash with Applesauce, Turkey Devonshire, Crab Grass, Spencer's Cocktail, and The World's Best Bloody Mary.
