{HISTORY}

Sunflowers, nasturtiums, hollyhocks, peonies, dandelions, hydrangeas, cornflowers, morning glories, primrose… all your favorites are included  plus so many more in this 1940s era how to-draw book.

Published in 1948 by French-American artist Victor Perard (1870-1957), Drawing Flowers contains dozens of examples of how to draw a wide variety of garden botanicals in realistic fashion. Containing helpful info on ways to create a sense of shape, size, petal formation and blossom density, Victor tackles the trickier aspects of capturing natural-looking flowers including shading, highlighting, movement, individuality and imperfections.

A beautiful art and garden book in addition to being a practical how-to guide, all flower lovers will appreciate Victor’s beautiful renditions of all types of flowers from the wispy dandelion to the heavily petaled hydrangea to the elegant orchid. Included along with instruction are also various fun facts, quotes, and history snippets of each flower as well as suggestions for materials and how to get started “seeing” flower shapes using the traditional grid layout method.

Prolific throughout his career, Victor was not only the author of many drawing books involving nature and animals but he was also an art teacher at Cooper Union in New York City for two decades as well as the Traphagen School of Fashion. Classically trained at New York’s National Academy of Design and the Art Students League,  as well as the Ecole  des Beaux Arts in Paris, Victor’s  work hangs in private collections and public institutions around the country including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Public Library, the Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian War Museum.

Reprinted several times over the course of the 20th century, this is the hard to find first edition published by Pitman in paperback form.
