... and that is the start of how in the 1960s, Roger Tory Peterson (1908-1996), one of America's leading experts in the study of nature and botanical art, came to illustrate A Field Guide To Wildflowers.  Collaborating with landscape architect and horticultural expert, Margaret McKenny (1885-1969), this field guide represents a visual approach to identifying over 1300 wildflowers in the northeastern and north-central landscape of the United States. 

Intended to be a complete guide for nature enthusiasts, this field book leans heavily on the physical appearance of plants and flowers to help easily determine the difference between a pink rose pogonia and a pink arethusa. The difference between a tall and stately Seaside Plantain and a tall and stately English Plantain. The difference between an orange day lily and an orange wood lily. With so many species and varieties to look for and admire in the wild, it can quickly become confusing as to which is which. Thanks to Roger and Margaret's concise guide, each flower illustration is accompanied by identification information that details the months each flower is in bloom, the dimensions, the location, and any other outstanding features that would differentiate one bloomer from a similar look-a-like.

Organized by predominant color, this guide also comes with a printed ruler on the back inside flap for precise measuring, illustrations detailing the anatomy of a flower, a botanical glossary, and brief descriptions of the flower families highlighted throughout this book.
