In the 1950s, if you wanted a stylish light that offered bright illumination and industrial design, you'd stop into the housewares section of your local discount store and find one just like this. Made of ceramic-fired white glass with a bullseye design, this light shade would have been wall-mounted on a simple base with the glass face pointing down. 

Popular for bathroom lighting and entry halls, this handsome shade would have set you back $1.69 in 1955 (about $19.00 today) and it would light up your life for decades to come.

Bearing all the hallmarks of dynamic midcentury design, this glass shade is sculptural in its simplicity and mirrors the sleek style of the automotive, maritime, and aeronautical industries that dominated the 1940s and 1950s aesthetic. 

Here in the Vintage Kitchen, we love it as a decor piece, but of course, it also would make a fabulous kitchen light too. If you're of the crafty sort you could fashion your own desk lamp with the addition of a light bulb, mounting station, and electrical wiring. A standard light bulb fits inside, so the sky is the limit as far as your creativity goes.
