{HISTORY}

Made in 1951 by Sterling China in East Liverpool, Ohio, this pair of vintage restaurantware dishes features a deep bowl shape and a rolled rim, a style that originally came with a rondevel-shaped lid. Larger than a custard dish but smaller than a cereal bowl, these two might have been part of military dishware supply and could have served sugar in proportions enough to accommodate a large crowd or a busy mess hall.

Very interesting in size and shape, these two are hard-to-find pieces these days. Although not accompanied by their original lids, they are sold together as a set here since their accommodating proportions make them all the more helpful as serving and prep bowls today. Great for dips, soup, oatmeal, nuts, crudite, and any other foods that might require a similar sort of vessel, these two are quite handy when it comes to cooking and serving.

1951 was packed with big events. The Korean War loomed over international news for all twelve months, but on a lighter note, lots of interesting pop culture highlights appeared this year, too. It marked the first year of the NBA All-Star games, the debut of Dennis the Menace in comic strip form, the first run of The King & I on Broadway, and the premiere of I Love Lucy on television. It was also the year the New Jersey Turnpike opened, Catcher in the Rye was published, and the phrase "the shot heard around the world" was coined in baseball. On the big screen, All About Eve was nominated for 13 Academy Awards, A Streetcar Named Desire starring Marlon Brando premiered, and MGM released An American in Paris.

Where and when these two bowls were privy to such engaging cultural chatter over spoonfuls of sugar helpings, we'll never quite know. But that's the fun of vintage restaurant ware. It stretches your imagination to create all sorts of interesting situations in which these hospitality servers may have found themselves. A dish and a story (or two) all wrapped up in one.
