Vintage S.G.K. Platter - All White with Gold Handles - Made in Japan
Very few of us are what we seem. Agatha Christie
{HISTORY}
A pretty serving platter with a little bit of mystery is always a welcome quality. This one was made by the Japanese pottery S.G.K. and that is the extent of the details that we know for certain. Its classic style with its minimal design and simple elegance could mean it was created a hundred years ago or just a handful of decades ago. It could have been made specifically for export for the American market or it could have been made for the international restaurant, hotel, or hospitality industries. With this serving piece, the fun is in imagining all the possibilities.
Entertaining an educated guess, we'd like to estimate that it dates to somewhere between the 1920s-1940s. During that time period, dishes that were exported as full sets were not required to be stamped "Made in Japan" on each and every piece within the set. Therefore, if this platter came in a set of dishware with various graduated platters in several sizes, it might have been a piece that escaped the extra stamp of origin. The other possibility is that this serving piece pre-dates 1891 when all dishes for export were required to be marked with the country of origin. Either scenario presents intriguing possibilities and interesting storytelling opportunities.
