MAY WE HAVE FUN IN THE DOING AS WELL AS THE EATING. DUNCAN HINES, 1945

{HISTORY}

Homer Laughlin dishware is always a favorite. Not only are they America's most prolific dishware maker, but they are also one of the oldest continuously operating potteries in the country. First founded by brothers, Homer and Shakespeare Laughlin, in East Liverpool, Ohio in 1871 - HL grew into a worldwide brand that has decorated kitchens and tables for over 145 years.

As you can imagine, a century and a half of dish manufacture results in an immense variety of patterns and designs. This set was made between 1961-1982 and features that classic retro diner color combination of turquoise and grey. We can just imagine the matching vinyl seats that accompanied the decor!

With the supportive rolled edge underneath the rim of each plate and saucer, a hallmark necessity for busy restaurants, these dishes were part of the hustle-bustle environment encountered at energetic eateries where the coffee was always on, the servers were always in motion and the chatter was non-stop.

Part of this set was made in the 1960s, featuring Homer Laughlin's first wave of restaurant ware known as Best China. The teal/turqouise/aqua leaf pattern remained a popular choice through the 1980s, when other half of this set was made.

Sometimes restaurant ware is marked with the dining establishment it was intended for - but sometimes not and in that case, their former food stories are left up to our imaginations. Such is the story here with this set. Perhaps they served up burgers and fries to the weekend little leaguers, or tuna sandwiches for the weekday business crowd and piles of pancakes for the late-nighters or early-morning eaters. Perhaps they came from a big city diner or a roadside cafe or maybe even a sleek amd modern cafeteria where they fed a big and mighty crowd at once.  Any scenario is possible when it comes to vintage restaurant ware.  That's the fun of retro dishes from the hospitality industry. They are a treat for the imagination as well as the mealtime!

Please note each piece is sold separately.
