Vintage 1960s White Restaurant-Ware Cups and Saucers - Your Host Scalloped Edge by Buffalo China circa 1964
{HISTORY}
Vintage restaurant ware with its heavy weight and thick-walled composition isn't always known for being delicate in design, but this pair of white midcentury cups and saucers with their simple scalloped edge is both elegant and feminine.
Made by Buffalo China in December 1964, this pattern was known as Your Host and was part of Buffalo's undecorated canon of dishware that was available to the hospitality industry as-is in its all-white color palette or also available for customization where logos, color variations or stylized designs could be added as well. Popular during the 1960s and 1970s, we've seen this style cup with a mustard stripe around the rim, and a black stripe around the saucer, and a silver stripe around both pieces. Its fun to think what a blank canvas it offered and how much appeal there was in its already pretty design.
Both the cups and the saucers feature a scalloped edge. The handle also has a cute shape kind of like an elfin ear with a little point at the top.
Classic dishware like this could have appeared in any sort of hospitality venue in the 1960s - a hotel restaurant, a roadside cafe, a corporate cafeteria, a neighborhood luncheonette or even a civic club where meetings and meals were served up together. We will never know where these two wound up in that department but it's a fun conversation to be had over a cup of coffee or tea dreaming up all the possibilities.
