MAY WE HAVE FUN IN THE DOING AS WELL AS THE EATING. DUNCAN HINES, 1945

{HISTORY}

Homer Laughlin dishware is always a favorite. Not only are they America's most prolific dishware maker, but they are also one of the oldest continuously operating potteries in the country. First founded by brothers Homer and Shakespeare Laughlin in East Liverpool, Ohio in 1871, HL grew into a worldwide brand that has decorated kitchens and tables for over 145 years.

As you can imagine, a century and a half of dish manufacture results in an immense variety of patterns and designs. This turquoise and grey leaf design is known as Grecian Green and debuted in 1961. Although, its color palette is much more turquoise than green in shade it was a popular pattern for over two decades and was in constant production up until the early 1980s.

This specific creamer was one of the early ones - made in 1962 and features the popular turquoise and grey color palette of midcentury diners and drive-ins across the country.  We can just imagine the matching vinyl seats that accompanied the decor as this little server passed from table to table while songs like "Do The Locamotion," "Sherry" and "Big Girls Don't Cry" played on the jukebox.

Made for Homer Laughlin's first wave of restaurant ware known as Best China, this creamer marked the start of a long hospitality career for Homer Laughlin and for this particular pattern too.

Sometimes restaurant ware is marked with the name of the dining establishment it was intended for - but sometimes not and in that case, their former food stories are left up to us to imagine. Such is the story here.  Perhaps this little creamer accompanied bottomless cups of coffee on cool autumn evenings. Or served syrup alongside a mile-high stack of blueberry pancakes, or maybe even it served drawn butter for someone's celebratory lobster dinner splurge. Any scenario is possible when it comes to vintage restaurant ware.  That's the fun thing about retro dishes from the hospitality industry. They are a treat for the imagination as well as the mealtime!
