Vintage 1960s Mikasa Poppy Pattern Round Platter Chop Plate circa 1969
{HISTORY}
Striped for summer and ready to serve up something fun, this beautiful, bright and cheery floral platter was made by Mikasa in 1969.
Part of their Poppy pattern with its yellow and white flowers and green stripes, this big platter is technically considered a chop plate and was intended for use in carrying large cuts of meat. But its large size and sturdy composition also make it equally functional as a cake plate, a party platter and a serving tray too.
When this pattern debuted in 1969, the green stripes were referred to as iris in color. Nowadays, we'd consider it closer to a light olive or split pea - a shade of green that easily crossed over from the jaunty midcentury modern color palettes of the 1960s to the earth-toned favorites of the 1970s. So dynamic for spring and summer decorating and entertaining, both the pattern and the palette provide lovely inspiration for all sorts of dynamic tablescape designs.
Mikasa dishware can always be counted on for meeting the moment of merriment when it comes to table decor. Founded by California-born George Aratani (1917-2013) in the 1950s, Mikasa began as an importer of Japanese dishware to America. Known for their fashionable designs, superb quality, and convenient sales shops located within stores like Macy's and Bloomingdale's, their dishware was an immediate success with mainstream mid-century America and helped George build two other successful businesses on the side.
Incredibly active throughout his life, George and his wife helped grow a business and a community in California that stood for respect and recognition for the contributions of Japanese-Americans in all areas of life.
