Vintage Green Striped Restaurant Ware Cups and Saucers by Buffalo China - Set of Two circa 1962-1986
{HISTORY}
The most classic of all restaurant ware classics, it’s hard to beat the universal appeal of the iconic green striped cup and saucer.
A favorite style among dish makers of both the domestic retail market and the hospitality industry, dozens of potteries had their own version of this simple green stripe pattern offered throughout many decades of the 20th century.
These two matching cups and saucers were made by Buffalo China for the restaurant industry between 1962-1986, a point in time just after Buffalo China acquired Allegheny China Company in 1962.
Working together for the next 24 years, Allegheny China produced 1/4th of Buffalo China’s inventory, and during this time period restaurant ware pieces made by Allegheny can be found with both the Buffalo China buffalo icon and the Allegheny mark together on the backsides of each dish.
Although a matching pattern, the accompanying saucers in this set feature just the Buffalo mark and the date codes denoting that one saucer was made in September 1963 and the other in December 1963. Whether Allegheny was just responsible for making the cups and Buffalo, the saucers or these two sets just got paired up this way, we don’t know, but they are fun representatives of the symbiotic working relationship between the two potteries.
Destined for America’s midcentury eating establishments, these two pair could have served tea on a train, coffee at a cafeteria, hot chocolate in a hotel, or been part of the serving set of any number of local eateries around the country. From diners to luncheonettes, social clubs to cocktail lounges, college dining halls to roadside cafes and everything in between, green stripes were always in demand and on the go.
Imagining all the places these two could have worked is half the fun of collecting vintage restaurant ware. It’s not only a cup of coffee or tea or chocolate, but it’s also a creative exercise in letting your mind wander and your imagination entertain your mealtime.
