Vintage 1950s Homer Laughlin Priscilla Platter circa 1950 Household Institute
THE NAME PRISCILLA MEANS RESPECTFUL. IN PARTICULAR, RESPECTFUL OF AGE, WISDOM, AND/OR CHARACTER. IN OTHER WORDS A PERFECT Moniker FOR 73-YEAR-OLD DISHES.
{HISTORY}
Made in West Virginia in 1950 by Homer Laughlin for the Household Institute, this vinatge floral platter features the Priscilla pattern in the Republic shape. With a scalloped edge, a gold rim, delicate embossing, and a series of pretty florals, this pattern was once part of a grocery store incentive program helping shoppers build their patterns piece by piece during a store's special promotion period.
Today, you might assume that dishes that were once part of a promotional discount program might be cheaply made or mass-produced in a million different pieces. Not so. At least when it comes to this Homer Laughlin pattern and its Household Institute seal.
In order to be a part of the Household Institute incentive program, dishes had to be top quality, indicative of current tastes and trends, and so attractive in design that they kept shoppers coming back for more.
Priscilla fit the bill on all fronts and became one of Household Institute's most popular patterns. Containing a colorful array of flowers in shades of pink, purple and green, this pattern is a modern interpretation of antique florals with a painterly style and fresh color palette. It reminds us a lot of a vintage fabric pattern seen on blouses and bed linens of the era, making this platter a fun display piece in other areas of the house too. Pretty without being fussy, delicate without being precious, this pattern is fresh, youthful, and full of good cheer, just the kind of optimistic attitude the post-WWII years reflected.
