{HISTORY}

Made in the 1950s by Harker Pottery, this lovely set of bread and butter plates features a blooming magnolia flower at center surrounded by pale grey ombre-style shading. Graceful and elegant on all fronts, this pattern is especially lovely for winter with its cool teal-grey eucalyptus color palette.

First featured on Harker's gadroon shape dinnerware in the late 1940s, this magnolia pattern, along with other similar Harker floral patterns, was paired in 1953 with a classic, round dish shape and this subtle underglaze ombre style paint technique that is slightly darker at the edges and gradually fades into white near the center.

One of our most favorite pottery manufacturers in the shop, it's hard to find a Harker Pottery pattern that is not exquisitely beautiful. This is just one example of the pretty aesthetic that almost all Harker pieces embodied throughout their long manufacturing life. As America's oldest pottery, first founded in 1840 in East Liverpool, Ohio, it was started by an English immigrant who began operation in a small log cabin that had previously been used for distilling whiskey. Harker eventually grew to become one of the largest china manufacturers in the world, and at the height of its operation in the 1960s, produced over 25 million dishes a year.

Symbols of dignity, gentleness, nobility, and womanly beauty, magnolias in all their varieties, have been captivating flower lovers since the 1700s, when they were first recorded on the island of Martinique. Whether you are adding to your existing Harker collection or mix and matching your favorite colors and patterns for a unique tabletop garden all your own, this set of five is sure to make every meal a beautiful one.
