Small Vintage French Saxon Platter with Blue Pink Black and Yellow Flowers circa 1934-1952
{HISTORY}
Not every platter can be traced back specifically to certain era of manufacture, but when it comes to this one we can tell a lot just by the design and the backstamp.
Made by the French Saxon China Company in Sebring, Ohio between1934 and 1952 this platter features gold filigree, an embossed edge, and a floral bouquet made up of pink, yellow, blue, orange, and black flowers.
The merging of equipment from two defunct potteries, the French China Company and Saxon China resulted in the newly formed French Saxon China Company in 1934. Stamped on the back of this platter is the mark for the union, The National Brotherhood of Operative Potters which changed its name in 1952 to the International Brotherhood of Pottery Workers, so the date when this platter was made falls between those two timelines.
As far as patterns go, dishware of the 1920s and 1930s featured the color black in their designs but this color choice fell out of vogue by the 1940s, so most likely this serving platter was made in the 1930s just after the French Saxon China Company was formed. While this floral pattern was not exclusive to French Saxon and can be found on dishware made by other potteries, it is unique in that it was combined with gold filgree, an embossed edge, and an interesting plate shape.
Now hard to find these days, this platter is a lovely example of Great Depression era pottery that has not only withstood a tumtultous time in American history but also a precarious timeframe in manufacturing. The French Saxon China Company only operated for 30 years before being sold to Royal China following the death of its owner in the mid-1960s.
Sturdy but also delicate, there's a wonderful aesthetic surrounding this dish that denotes its 90 years of age in the loveliest of ways. Concentric crazing lines on the front, some worn areas in the gold around the rim, and some light staining add authentic character to this long-time traveler.
