That was the magical thing about the 70's: artists ruled. Sissy Spacek

{HISTORY}

Started by two brothers in East Liverpool, Ohio in the 1870's, Homer Laughlin has remained one of the most iconic dish makers in American history. Producers of a zillion different patterns from plain to decadent, it is probably safe to say that they have made at least one dish pattern to suit each and every person's particular taste over the past 150 years. A marvel in and of itself! As a company that manufactured both timeless and trendy designs, decade by decade, they had the ability to navigate through three centuries while still remaining relevant and sought after in the marketplace.

By the time the 1970s rolled around - the decade when this platter was made - there was a little Victorian revival going on in the American design industry. But unlike the real Victorians of the 1800s, the revivalists were a more enlightened, more accepting, and more relaxed bunch. This created a stylish environment that embraced free spirit bohemian attitudes and matched them with the feminine, romantic patterns prominent in Victorian times. Old with a new modern twist, if you will.

The result of such a marriage produced dishware like this very rare platter. It contains embossed edging and a vibrant green spray rim (both popular style details in dishes of the late 1800s) along with a floral center containing tulips, roses, and daisies that were handpainted in a loose and free-flowing manner befitting 1970s bohemian sensibilities. Together these two distinct time periods produced one visually interesting platter that is both unique and stylish.
