{HISTORY}

Acantha. It's the name of a spiny leaved plant first discovered in ancient Greece and also the name of this pretty dishware pattern made by J & G Meakin in England just before the turn of the 20th century.

Made in the 1890s in the bustling pottery hub of Stoke-on-Trent, England, these five butter pats feature a navy blue floral rim with a center medallion that contains dots and flourishes, and little sprout-like emblems. Rare pieces in a rare hard-to-find pattern nowadays, these butter pats may have originally been designed to hold individual servings of butter at table, but nowadays they make the greatest prep dishes too.

Even if you are new to cooking, you understand the importance and the general ease of procedure if you lay out all your ingredients first, premeasured and ready to go. These dishes are just the perfect size for measuring small amounts of spices, herbs, sugar, salt, pepper, etc  and help keep your workspace neat and tidy.

They also make great holders for soaked tea bags at teatime, individual serving plates of nuts or olives at cocktail time,  little coasters for tea light candles and chopstick rests at mealtime.

Like our other most favorite dish, the berry bowl, we can't say enough good things about antique butter pats.  They are pretty, functional, and a handy helper for all sorts of kitchen necessities. Cook with them once and you'll be hooked, we promise.

Given their blue and white color palette, this set of five looks great with other blue and white dishes, flow-blue collections and antique ironstone.
