{HISTORY}

This antique floral gravy boat was made by the United States Pottery Company in Wellsville, Ohio, between 1893-1922. Featuring pretty bouquets of pink roses and blue forget-me-nots on both the interior and exterior, the florals are made of transferware, but they are so delicately shaded they almost look like they were hand-decorated using watercolor paints.  Embossing around the handle and belly adds extra flourish along with a scalloped edge at the base.

We just love when antique dishes feature both a pattern on the interior as well as the exterior. With an extra little peek at something pretty, gravy boats in this style, in addition to traditional serving purposes, also make great planters for succulents, as the view is just as pretty from overhead as it is from a straight-on perspective.

Throughout its slim window of operation, the United States Pottery Company was known for its exceptionally high quality of manufacture and durability. Because they were in business for less than three decades, pieces from this pottery can be harder to find these days. Possibly that is in part due to a fire in 1900 that destroyed several critical areas in their main building, including the decorating studio, the packing house, offices and warehouses, Although they rebuilt and continued manufacturing until 1922, this upset in production and the limited timeframe in which they operated overall make each United States Pottery Company piece discovered today all the more prized.
