{HISTORY}

On the victorian table in the 19th century,  every type of food was beautifully displayed on a dish made specficially for that one menu item.  Mustard had its petite mustard pot, celery had its unique, oblong dish, bones had a crescent-style holder, butter pats were served in little ceramic squares, salt in miniature bowls, etc., Not to miss out on the fun, fruit had its own bowl too. A big server ideally suited for pears and other orchard fruits fresh from the garden.

Made in Bavaria by Oscar Schaller & Co, between 1882-1909, this beautiful, large fruit bowl features an oval shape, gold detailing, and a colorful handpainted pear dangling from a branch.

Similiar in shape to a football but larger in size, this bowl is so unique in form and composition. With its gold filigree around the edge, a handpainted pear in the center, gold ribbing on the sides, a scalloped rim, and decorative handles,  this bowl is both a statement piece and a functional serving bowl.

Sized at 13.5" inches in lengths it easily accomodates 8-10 pears based on size, a dozen or more peaches, two to three large clusters of grapes, 3 pints of berries, eight apples or a mixture of all five fruits, its a fun piece for eyecatching fruit displays and also a handy countertop fruit bowl stuffed with the daily regulars like bananas and oranges, lemons and limes, managoes and avocados.

We always loved when a little mystery gets solved. Recently, we had a large, square, antique berry serving dish of unknown origin in the shop as well. As it turns it was made by the same maker and boasts a similiar design and aesthetic, so now we are able to attribute that bowl to this maker as well. Oscar Schaller & Co were well known porcelain makers in Bavaria, exapanding their business diring the early to mid 20th century by purcahsing oother porcelain maunfacturers in the area. In the 1950s, they rebranded  as Winterling and continued a successful run until the early the aerly 2000s through various company changes and acquisitions.

This bowl features Oscar Schaller & Co's earliest impressed mark featuring an anchor amd the the initials S.C. tucked inside. it's difficult to see the mark clearly for photograph purposes, but its fairly easy to recognize with a magnifying glass.
