Antique Purple Violets Floral Soup Bowl with Decorative Gold Filigree
Grace is a floating cosmic bash shouting its way through the streets of the universe, flinging the sweetness of its cassations to every window, pounding at every door... (Robert Farrar Capon, 1925-2013)
This antique soup bowl has celebration written all over it! With its graceful bunting-style filigree around the rim and its big blousy bouquet of purple and white violets, it's hard to imagine a garden party where this dish wouldn't be the star of the show.
Unmarked as to maker or manufacturer, it's not certain who made it and when, but it harkens back to the day when big summer holidays like the Fourth of July were celebrated in big ways.
We just love the dots accenting the embossed rim. Tucked in between wheat-style sprigs, they almost look like a string of bulb lights illuminating over a dozen oval-shaped emblems below them. Tucked inside the emblems themselves are shapes similar to flowers, bells, and a center angel figure with more dots and dashes below that. Those gold details were pretty enough on their own but add in the deep plum, purple and grape-shaded bouquet of violets and you have quite a unique blend of visual artistry all wrapped up in one pretty bowl. The whole arrangement reminds us of circus tents and bandstands and summer weddings and big outdoor banquets where the tables are set for weddings and wonder and warm welcomes.
- Unique design
- Colors include gold, plum, purple, lavender, grape, celery, lemon, sage, spring green, and pink
In gorgeous antique condition. There are no chips or cracks. Lovely crazing and light staining throughout offer that gorgeous, authentically aged patina. On the back, it looks, at first glance like there is a small crack, but that is actually a manufacturing imperfection as it's caught below the glaze and has no effect on the overall composition or integrity of the bowl. Please see photos.
Measures just a smidge over 9" inches in diameter and weighs 1lb.
