Antique Porcelain Round Platter with Pink & Green Roses - The Munich Vienna Austria
{HISTORY}
At just under 13" inches in diameter, this antique porcelain platter with its beautiful garland of pink and green roses is just waiting for a homemade layer cake.
Technically considered a chop plate or a round serving platter, it was originally intended to serve large cuts of meat or bigger portions of heavier foods. But in addition to those still very practical uses, this size plate is just perfect for displaying cakes, cookies, and other baked goods piled high for pretty presentation.
Made in Vienna, Austria around the turn of the 20th century or a little before, this plate bears the pattern name The Munich and was imported to America by one of three companies - PH Leonard, Bawo & Dotter, or Paul A. Straub. It's difficult to determine which of the three it was specifically since they all used the same import mark, but each of them was located in New York City during the 19th and 20th centuries and each were known for their impeccable taste when it came to introducing European porcelain for the American market.
In addition to the garland of roses, this platter also features a scalloped edge, grosgrain ribbon-style embossing, and two gold stripes around the rim as well. Heavy, weighing in at 2.6 lbs. it can easily handle multi-tiered cakes, heavier baked goods like bundt cakes, fruit cakes, or double-stuffed-pies. Especially pretty for display at weddings, bridal showers, baby showers, garden parties and tea time gatherings or any other event that might call for pastel-themed confections, this platter is sure to set the stage for an assortment of delightful (and delicious) desserts.
