Antique Pink Striped Pitcher by Burgess & Campbell
{HISTORY}
Made in Trenton , New Jersey between 1879-1936, this antique Burgess & Campbell jug is both old and new all at once.
Featuring a classic pink band framed by gold striping, a popular design in the late 1800s to early 1900s, this jug also features two sets of white petaled flowers outlined in gold. With a fresh, youthful style, and a contemporary design, these flowers look so modern in appearance, you might suspect that they could have been applied sometime in the 2020s as opposed to the 1880s. Were they the passion design of a forward thinking Victorian artist? A time traveling 21st century designer brought back to life at the turn of the 20th century? Or simply a time appropriate style that has been replicated and adored over and over again throughout the past 130 years?
All this is a bit mysterious, but one thing we do know is that is one of the most interesting design mashups that we’ve seen on an antique jug that’s been traveling the country for over a century. That old yet new design aesthetic combined with a weathered patina make this heirloom a very eye-catching.and unique piece of ironstone.
Burgess and Campbell was the precursor to the International Pottery Company. Named for its 1870s era owners, William Burgess and John Campbell, the B & C mark was one of several in International Pottery Co.’s winding history. As makers of both high quality hotelware and dishware for the domestic market, the pottery was first founded in the 1860s by Henry Speeler. As the pottery changed management, other marks followed its lineage detailing who was at the helm of production for each piece. Those marks included Henry Speeler & Sons, Lincoln Pottery, and Carr & Clark. This makes for interesting collecting of International Pottery Co pieces.
Bigger than a creamer but smaller than a wash basin pitcher, this little charmer is a great size for all sorts of kitchen purposes from storing utensils and flatware to displaying fresh cut flower bouquets.
Like almost all antique ironstone, this jug comes with an endearing weathered patina that will appeal to any sympathetic heart or designer that wants to add instant character to a room. Crazing, staining and a bit of flaking at the spout offers a complimentary aesthetic opposite the gold and shimmery detailing that outlines the flowers and the banded waistline. A beauty from all angles, this is history at your fingertips with all its tender age spots proudly on display.
