The real alchemy consists of being able to turn gold back again into something else, and that's the secret that most of your friends have lost. Edith Wharton, House of Mirth

{HISTORY}

Just ten years after the American Civil War ended, this antique platter was made by Knowles Taylor & Knowles in East Liverpool, OH. Imagine all the history it has seen since then!

Featuring a celebratory pattern of gold ribbons and floral swags set against a scalloped rim, it is a heavy piece of servingware that has traveled the century and a half beautifully. Made of semi-vitreous porcelain, its bright white color looks beautiful with other antique serving pieces and the gold design adds sparkling embellishment that reflects like little twinkling fairy lights.

A family-run pottery for most of its life, Knowles Taylor Knowles was in business from 1854-1931. Hard to find in any sort of complete sets nowadays, Knowles, Taylor & Knowles, made both hotelware for the hospitality industry as well as domestic pieces for home use, so they are a fun pottery to collect on both fronts. Unique, and ever-stylish, antique platters like this one look especially lovely hanging on the wall just as much as they do on the table.
