Antique John Maddock & Sons Pink & Green Floral Berry Bowls circa 1896-1906 - Set of 10
THE GOODNESS OF JOHN MADDOCK & SONS ROYAL VITREOUS IS PRAISED THE WORLD OVER... (FROM A 1912 DISHWARE ADVERTISEMENT, SCRANTON, PA)
{HISTORY}
Made in England between 1896 and 1906 by John Maddock & Sons, this set of ten antique berry bowls features trailing spring blossoms in the prettiest of color palettes. Celadon, sage, raspberry, and a trio of pale pastels in blush, dove, and lavender highlight a barely there embossed swag that runs around the rim.
Hard to find in such large quantity, these berry bowls are the charmers of the table and the kitchen, thanks to their size and ever-present worker-bee capabilities. Beautiful as serving pieces for a host of foods from morning yogurt to late night ice cream, they also act as helpful meal prep bowls, garnish dishes, and party food servers for nuts, olives, dried fruit, dips, candies, and other assorted delights.
Closely resembling antique French Limoges patterns produced by Haviland and Bernardaud, these similarities are not unusual, as many potteries kept up with their competition and if one pattern or dish style was selling particularly well others raced to create a similar design. The fact that this one matches those other patterns so well just goes to show how popular these pink and green floral designs and color palettes were during the late 19th to early 20th centuries. Light and bright wins the day on the Victorian table during this time period.
Each bowl in this set is unique in that parts of the transferware were hand-decorated with dabs of color. An artistic compliment that makes them lovely candidates for mixing and matching with porcelain, ironstone, and antique dishware sets of the era, as well as standout pieces for all-white dishware collections.
