{HISTORY}

Gently scattered wisps of golden flowers gather here just in time for spring and summer.

One thing is always guaranteed when it comes to antique porcelain from Limoges, France. It's always beautiful. These two porcelain dinner plates were made by Haviland & Co in Limoges, France between 1889-1931 and feature a light, bright and airy color palette consisting of sage, goldenrod, taupe, and pale celadon.

Accented with embossed swirls and a scalloped rim, this sunny color palette is just the ticket to add a bit of delicate warmth to your table for all your spring and summer soirees.

That's the type of style that the Haviland family was known for. Synonymous with fine quality porcelain - not only an assurance of exquisite craftsmanship but also of gorgeous patterns, the Havilands have been making and selling dishes since the 1800s.

Like all families with generations of an empire behind them, the Havilands weren't without their own dramas. We featured their interesting family story in a blog post here, detailing the competitive nature of the market and also of the Havilands themselves as each member of the family raced to produce the most exquisite porcelain in the world.

Between the 1950s-1970s, Haviland enthusiast Arlene Sclheiger cataloged the thousands of different patterns bearing the Haviland name. Since many Haviland patterns were not named in the factory, Arlene devised her own numerical pattern system to differentiate one Haviland design from another. It was a huge undertaking, one that consumed a large portion of her life. But it was not in vain. Arlene's work is still the standard catalog tool used by collectors today.

These plates with their dainty dill-like fronds and golden flowers were part of the Schleiger 245 pattern, which came in multiple color combinations including blue and green, pink and green, and yellow and green florals. This yellow and green floral pattern is known as Schleiger 245F - an important number (and letter) to know if you are filling out an existing collection or interested in starting one anew.
