{HISTORY}

With trailing blossoms on front and a beautiful maker's mark on back, this antique dinner plate is a beauty from all angles. Made in 1887 by George Jones & Sons in the bustling pottery hub of Stoke-on-Trent, England, this 9" inch dinner plate features swags of trailing flowers in a navy blue color palette against a bright white background.

A natural fit for blue and white dishware collections as well as antique ironstone, George Jones & Sons dishware had tendency  to lean towards Asian and Art Nouveau-style aesthetics, favoring simple designs over busy patterns. This pattern was called Aberdeen Blue and was available as an entire set containing everything from place settings to tureens, platters and other serving ware.

Hard to find these days, it has lovely mix and match potential and year-round charm. The back of this dish features the GJ & Sons mark with a crescent moon and the 1880s-era registration number alongside an impressed mark of the same style, an etched letter 9 (most likely referring to the plate size), an impressed letter N, and a blue letter B or 8. Sometimes the back of the plate is just as interesting as the front!

A distinguished award winner in major pottery cities like Paris, London, and Vienna, George Jones & Sons operated between 1861-1957. In addition to dishware, they also  produced a large quantity of artisticly designed majolica pieces.
