Early American Beverages by John Hull Brown - 1966 Edition
Whatever there was of novelty in entertainment or instruction, was delivered at the tavern, and it served as the gathering place for folk on scores of duties or pleasures bent...
{HISTORY}
If you had any sort of curiosity about any bit of history related to colonial days and early drinking in America, then John Hull Brown is your go-to resource. In his very detailed book Early American Beverages, published in 1966, John admits to years of wormhole explorations that eventually made up the subject of this book. And like anyone who appreciates a good research task, John leaves no stone unturned when it comes to his topic at hand.
Combining recipes, history, hospitality, historic sites, stories and tons of quotations from 18th and 19th century sources, Early American Beverages is a fascinating look at how, what, when, where, and why our ancestors drank during the colonial era.
Coffees, cordials, punch. Beer, wine, toddies. tea. Every beverage is up for discussion and clarity. Dozens of beverage recipes written as they were prepared back in the day offer insight and instruction on what it might take to make a modern-day version of centuries-old drinks. Descriptions of everyday colonial life and activities add context.
A great reference book for mixologists, American history buffs, and brew masters, there is something of interest to be found on each page.
The only thing we wish we could have learned more about was the author himself. Apart from being a book collector, history aficionado, and research lover, not much else is known about John. Perhaps that's the ultimate compliment when it comes to writing such a unique and interesting book. His subject is the story. Not himself.
