Originally published in 1956, this revised 1959 edition of the Better Homes & Gardens Barbecue Book has just about everything you need to know about cooking outdoors. Whether making pancakes on the grill griddle, smoked brisket in the charcoal oven or classic barbecued chicken on the wood-fired Weber, this vintage cookbook walks you through all the options of outdoor food prep. Complete with snappy retro illustrations, black and white photography and several charts and diagrams, it leaves no barbeque method undiscussed. 

This is an especially fun cookbook becomes it offers real insight into midcentury cooking habits of both men and women. Traditionally in the 1950's, grilling was a masculine endeavor, giving the ladies time off from preparing a big meal (although she was still responsible for salads, sides and dessert!). Men aren't often praised for their culinary abilities in vintage cookbooks but here in this one they are, so it is fun to read about what foods midcentury men brought to the table and how.   Interesting recipes include a plethora of different types of barbecue sauces and marinades as well as a big variety of different ways to cook traditional standards like burgers, kabobs, steak, and chicken, that involve unusual presentation like tepees and totem poles. This cookbook also favors fun with campy word usage (buck-a-roo breakfasts,  bowwow bean bakes, quick as scat frank fries, etc) and a general overall exciting narrative that adds a whimsical air and hint of goofy fun to the whole affair.
