There's a vast difference between an "ordinary" and a "great" coffee... (from a 1935 advertisement for Yuban coffee

{HISTORY}

These two vintage coffee tins capture so much cozy Americana it's hard to decide where to begin. The older of the two is the Yuban coffee tin which dates to the 1920s-1930s era. It's a rare find these days featuring Yuban's early 20th-century font before it was changed to a more linear shape starting in the 1940s.

Yuban was founded by the Arbuckle Brothers, John and Charles, in 1871. Immigrants from Scotland, they established the first commercially roasted and packaged coffee company in New York City. Back then the company was called Arbuckle Brothers and the coffee beans were roasted and then coated with egg whites to seal in freshness and sugar to add sweetness. Selling their roasted beans in convenient one-pound packages eventually led them to become the largest coffee company in the U.S.

Yuban was first introduced under the Arbuckle Bros. brand in 1913. It was officially known as Yuletide Banquet and consisted of a more premium blend of coffee that John Arbuckle served at first, only to visiting houseguests, and included in holiday gift baskets to friends. This special blend was so favorited among John's friends that he eventually released it to the public, shortening the name to Yuban. Still on the market today, it's one of America's long-lasting food brands that retains its own devoted following despite the advent of more gourmet coffee companies.

Bliss Coffee was part of the General Foods brand.  Although called Bliss, it was actually Maxwell House coffee repackaged under a different name and sold in regional grocery stores at a more expensive price. This "premium" Bliss coffee was more about marketing than it was about delivering exceptionally unique coffee (although Maxwell House was a leading favorite throughout the 20th century).  These specialty coffee brands geared towards regional grocery stores offered more choices to shoppers and they varied depending on which area of the country they lived in. That's why there are a lot of fun vintage coffee tins with unique names. Chances are, the more creative the name that appeared on the tin, the more likely it was to contain Maxwell House coffee. This vintage Bliss tin dates to the 1940s.
