A family-run business since 1861...

{HISTORY}

When it comes to gift-giving, especially around the holidays, there's one specialty food item that has been a beloved favorite for generations of cookie lovers the world over.

 Made in the Netherlands by Hellema, a bakery founded by 22-year-old Andele Hellema back in 1861, these adored sweet treats, known as Speculaas are crunchy spiced cookies laced with cinnamon and ginger. Baked in the shape of windmills and packaged for the holidays in blue and white delft-style gift tins, these Dutch treats have been mainstays of the Hellema brand for generations.

Not every cookie in the world is equally enjoyed for their taste AND their packaging, but when Hellema introduced their Delft-style metal tins in the 1960s as a gift wrap option for Speculaas, they were a hit. The tins have changed slightly in style and design over the decades, but they all have featured classic blue and white scenes that are synonymous with Dutch history.

Stamped with an older version of the Hellema logo, this tin most likely dates to the 1980s-1990s era. Each side portrays a different, highly detailed seascape, making it an eye-catching decor piece from all angles.

These beautiful boxes became such collectible keepsakes in the 20th century that they are still part of Hellema's packaging today.  Today, they feature hinge-style lids but still retain the same harbor imagery found on this older box.
